The history of the Lincoln automobile goes back to the early twenties when an automotive engineer by the name of Henry Leland produced a brilliant luxury sedan that was named after one of our most brilliant presidents. Equipped with the first ever multiple barrel carburetor in history, the first production of the Lincoln automobile proved to be too costly to the company, and as a result, an auction was held and Henry Ford bought out the company. However, Ford knew that Henry Leland was on the right track, so he offered him a position as chief executive over the brand. Although, their relationship didn't last long, the two Henry's would prove to be giants in the automotive industry.
Lincoln has long been one of the leader's in the luxury American car line-up; going up against the Cadillac and the early Duesenberg. First production models, like the Zephyr, which featured a sportier look was met with rave reviews. The Zephyr became a name for itself. After World War II, the Ford Company began efforts on constructing a new Lincoln automobile; this would be known as the Lincoln Continental. Although, first produced for Edsel Ford, the European styled vehicle was different than other boxier cars of the day, and as a result, the Ford Company made plans to mass produce the Lincoln Continental.
The Lincoln Continental became the leader in Lincoln models and held that flagship well into the late seventies and early eighties; however, it was at this time that the Lincoln Town Car was introduced and became a phenomenal hit.
In 1998, the Lincoln brand was featured as the number one selling American made luxury vehicle. Thanks in part to the ever so popular SUV, the Navigator. However, in recent times, the Lincoln industry has fell quiet behind in sales, due in part to their lack of model introductions. It is no doubt, though, once a new Lincoln is available to the public, it will most likely be received with open arms; just as it has for over eighty years, now.
